Comfort and intimacy,
worth talking about.

Vaginal dryness and discomfort are common, treatable, and nothing to be embarrassed about. Dr. Megan Luciano creates a comfortable space to talk about it, and real options to feel like yourself again.

Understanding
GSM.

As estrogen levels fall during perimenopause and menopause, the tissues of the vagina and urinary tract can become thinner, drier, and less elastic. This cluster of changes is called genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), and it affects a large share of women, though few bring it up.

The result can be vaginal dryness, itching or burning, discomfort or pain during sex, and urinary symptoms like urgency or frequent infections. Unlike hot flashes, these changes tend to be progressive, meaning they often continue or worsen without treatment, but they respond very well to care.

You don't have to accept discomfort or a loss of intimacy as just part of getting older. Dr. Luciano treats these concerns with the same seriousness and discretion as any other part of your health.

Common
questions.

What causes vaginal dryness during menopause?+
It's caused by falling estrogen levels, which make the vaginal and urinary tissues thinner and drier. This is part of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), and it's very common, affecting a large share of women in perimenopause and beyond.
Is it normal for sex to become painful?+
It's common, but it's not something you have to live with. Pain during sex is often related to vaginal dryness and tissue changes from lower estrogen, and it usually responds very well to treatment. Dr. Luciano can help.
How is vaginal dryness treated?+
Effective options include local (vaginal) estrogen, non-hormonal vaginal moisturizers, and lubricants, among others. The right choice depends on your symptoms, preferences, and health history, and Dr. Luciano will walk you through them.
Is vaginal estrogen safe?+
For most women, local vaginal estrogen is considered safe and effective because it works mainly on the tissue where it's applied, with very little absorbed into the body. Dr. Luciano will review your history and help you decide what's right for you.
Can these symptoms get worse over time?+
They can. Unlike hot flashes, which often ease, GSM symptoms tend to be progressive and may continue or worsen without treatment. The good news is that they respond well to care, so addressing them early helps.
Will this affect my libido, and can that be helped?+
Lower estrogen and discomfort can affect desire and intimacy, and that's a valid thing to address. Dr. Luciano treats these concerns as a real part of your health and can discuss options to help.
