Heavy and irregular
periods, taken seriously.

Bleeding that's heavy, unpredictable, or just not normal for you is worth investigating, not enduring. Dr. Megan Luciano helps you understand what's behind it and what to do about it.

Understanding abnormal
bleeding.

Periods vary from woman to woman, but bleeding that soaks through protection every hour, lasts longer than a week, comes too often or not often enough, or includes large clots is considered abnormal uterine bleeding, and it's worth a closer look.

Heavy or irregular bleeding can have many causes, including hormonal imbalances, PMOS (PCOS), thyroid issues, fibroids, polyps, and the natural changes of perimenopause. Sometimes it's nothing serious, and sometimes it points to something that needs treatment. The only way to know is to evaluate it properly.

Beyond the disruption to daily life, heavy bleeding can lead to anemia, fatigue, and a real toll on how you feel. Dr. Luciano's goal is to find the cause and give you options, rather than telling you to just live with it.

When bleeding
isn't normal.

If any of these sound familiar, it's worth an evaluation. Heavy or irregular bleeding is common, but that doesn't mean you have to accept it.

How Dr. Luciano
approaches it.

Abnormal bleeding has many possible causes, so care starts with finding yours, then treating it directly.

01
Find the cause
A thorough history, exam, lab work, and imaging like ultrasound when needed, to identify what's driving the bleeding.
02
Targeted treatment
Depending on the cause, options include hormonal and non-hormonal medications, treating underlying conditions like PMOS (PCOS) or thyroid issues, and in-office procedures or referral when appropriate.
03
Follow-through
Care that's revisited and adjusted until your cycles, and how you feel, are back where they should be.

Common
questions.

What counts as a heavy or abnormal period?+
Bleeding is considered heavy or abnormal if you soak through a pad or tampon every hour or two, bleed for more than seven days, pass large clots, bleed between periods, or have cycles that are very short, very long, or unpredictable. If your periods have changed from what's normal for you, that's worth a conversation.
What causes heavy or irregular bleeding?+
Common causes include hormonal imbalances, PMOS (PCOS), thyroid problems, fibroids, polyps, certain medications, and the natural changes of perimenopause. Dr. Luciano evaluates for these rather than assuming, so you get an actual answer.
When should I see a doctor about my periods?+
If your bleeding is heavy enough to disrupt your life, you're bleeding between periods or after sex, your cycle has changed noticeably, or you feel tired or run-down (a possible sign of anemia), it's worth getting evaluated. You don't need to wait until it's severe.
Can heavy periods be treated without surgery?+
Often, yes. Many women find relief with hormonal or non-hormonal medications or by treating an underlying cause. Procedures are one option for certain cases, but they're not the only one. Care is matched to what's causing your bleeding and your goals.
Can irregular periods affect fertility?+
They can, since irregular cycles sometimes signal irregular ovulation. The good news is that many of the underlying causes are treatable. If you're trying to conceive, Dr. Luciano will factor that into your evaluation and plan.
Could irregular bleeding be related to perimenopause?+
Yes, very often. Changing, heavier, or unpredictable periods are one of the most common signs of perimenopause. Dr. Luciano can help you tell the difference between normal transition changes and bleeding that needs further evaluation.
